Licensure in Other States
MFTs interested in relocation to and establishment of a professional MFT practice in another state are encouraged to begin planning and preparing well in advance of the move. Obtaining and accurately documenting hours of clinical experience and supervision required by the state of destination can save time while preventing unnecessary duplication of experiences and associated expenses.
The following resources addressing licensure requirements for all 50 states are provided by the Association of Marriage and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards (AMFTRB):
State Licensing Boards - An interactive map provides contact information for the board office in each state.
State Licensure Comparison Chart - The requirements for licensure vary among the 50 states. The chart provides information about the types of licensure as well as the professional experience and examination requirements required by each state.
